I'm a education volunteer in Vava'u one of the island groups north of the main island in the South Pacific. Right now the kids are using my laundry posts to show me how many pull ups they can do, how they can hang upside down like a monkey, or how they can climb the poles like a coconut tree. But after a big storm one of my posts got damaged, so when they come over they're only allowed to use the safe one. I would like to built a jungle gym for the kids to climb around and play on, a space that is safe for them to have fun.
The side mission of this playground is to give teenages, young adults, and adults a gym. Think crossfit. Non-communicable diseases are the biggest threat to the health of Tongans (see http://www.commonwealthhealth.org/pacific/tonga/non_communicable_diseases_in_tonga/ for more information), and it is my attempt to use this jungle *gym to promote exercise and well-being in my community.
