Project Details

A playground benefitting the residents and visitors to the restaurant and the shop (tshongkhang) at a new 3 storey apartment building in Chumey. 1 October 2013 Finally, some action is happening on the building front. The playground site is somewhat constrained by existing features at the property so the size of the playground will likely be scaled back. There is also only one person working on the building work (me) as the workers that were at the house have now moved on to other jobs elsewhere. I am currently putting up the frame for a set of 2 swings. If I have time (I am leaving in December), I may add another feature such as stepping logs. 30 October 2013 I finally managed to borrow a working drill and bolted the cross-beam on to the uprights, thanks to some help from my neighbour Kinley and my landlord, Tenzin. 31 October 2013 Some success! I hung the first swing and my 2 boys gave it a trial run. Now we've just got to shift a huge pile of timber that was placed in the swing area of the proposed swings (the timber was delivered as payment of a debt as goods instead of cash) and I can put up a second swing. Then I am going to place some sawdust as soft-fall material beneath the swings. 6 November 2013 I hung the second swing and I've slowly been digging out the base and forming a mound around the edge so I can place some sawdust as softfall. Maybe hanging the swing before placing the softfall is a mistake as my son did fall off the tyre swing and bump his head. It wasn't a bad fall but it did make me increase my efforts so that by 2 days later I had a nice cushion of sawdust beneath both swings. The local kids are coming here to play now and they really seem to be loving it. I think having softfall material is great too as it has a dual purpose - firstly to prevent injuries and secondly, the kids love doing full body slams onto the soft surface.
