This group of under 5's is the most vulnerable and often die from drinking dirty water or contracting malaria or other diseases. We will provide them with a nutritional porridge 5 mornings a week, cooked on a fuel saving oven. This not only builds up their immune system giving them a better chance of survival, but means that their guardians don't have another mouth to feed and encourages children to go on to attend Primary. The pre-school and feeding centre is manned by local volunteers who will be trained by UNICEF and food provided by Feed the Children, Malawi. The building will also be used in the afternoon as a classroom for pupils in the nearby Primary who don't have a class and currently learn under trees, along with being used for adult numeracy and literacy classes and/or a meeting space. On Saturdays it is used as a Childrens Corner, which is a club for orphans under the age of 18 in the area, giving them phychosocial support addressing their emotional needs through making memory books, playing team games, learning about HIV/AIDs amongst other things. Children do not experience play equipment such as the proposed, in our rural area and this is the first project of this kind for us to install. We are partnering with an organisation called Aid Camps International who are funding the main building of the CBCC and we are looking to raise funds for this play equipment enabling the children to experience a different level of play, encouraging further co-operative and active play. This not only enhances their social interaction, but benefits their physical development.
