We live in a small town Datca in Mugla in Turkey. The playgroounds are in very bad shapei rusty, with missing parts and muddy in winter. There isn't enough playgrounds either fro all kids. The weather is very nice in Datca and it actually allows kids to play outside all year round, rainy and chilly in winter but still with sunshine most of the time.
The municipality answers as they do not have enough finance to repair them and they say kids break them anyway. Kids love to climb on the sliding face of the slides because they do not have any good climbing areas. The playground equipments are old fashioned and serves to a very limited activity and boring after all. Since the kids can not find right places to spend their energy and to challenge them they might be harmful to the equipments sometimes.
The teens also have nothing to do in this small town. We need to have exciting playgrounds for them too (big swings from the trees, rope climbing areas etc).
I have started searching the web last year and found playgroundideas site and I am very happy to see that things can be done using raw materials. I am also very interested in finding ideas on recycling so using old tires for playgrounds seemed to be a very good idea.
Together with the kindergarden teacher we decided to start a project to renew all the existing playgrounds and add new units using mostly old tires and basic materials. We are now in the planning phase and soon we will gather the municipality workers and volunteers to build them.
