Project Details

The Daycare/Nursery program branch educates and cares for approximately 250 children ages 9 months-6 years. The current features of St. Monica's playground include:

  • 1 see-saw
  • 1 swingset
  • 1 slide and 1 unraised (new) slide
  • 2 merry-go-rounds
  • A few half-buried tire climbers / several free tires for play

The administration of the centre and nursery school has discussed possible renovations and hopes to seek further input from teachers and children regarding what they would like their playground to include. The centre hopes that an improved and expanded playground will provide quality play experiences for the nursery children and will encourage teachers to utilize outdoor space for classroom activities. Materials and natural elements available for use include recycled car tires, recycled plastic bottle "bricks" for use in construction of seating, tables, and structures, timber, tree stumps, and shady forested areas. Possible constructed additions to the playground include:

  • Large sand play area
  • Various types of tire swings
  • Tire climbing frames
  • An outdoor open "half hut" for use by teachers, small student groups
  • Outdoor seating and tables
  • Utilization of forest behind the school for play areas and classroom seating

Pictures of the current playground site can be found here.
