Comoros is a small island Archipelago situated in the Mozambique Channel in the Western Indian Ocean halfway between the East Coast of Africa and the North of Madagascar . Full of a vibrant Afro-Arab culture, The Comoros Islands gained independence from France in 1975. Since, the country has experienced multiple coups d'etats usurping whatever progress that was made by the previous administration. Comoros is unique for its relatively peaceful coups d'etats. Lacking infrastructure, the country struggles to provide water, power, and gas for the citizenry. As the first group of Peace Corps volunteers since 1995, we are tasked to teach English at the local public schools. Along with our project goals, volunteers are encouraged to take on various other sustainable ideas. In my village,we've decided to build a playground because there are currently no playgrounds on the Grand Island of Comoros for which young children can play at. My friends, Aftah and Housni want to start small and hope the playground craze catches on. In our village, there isn't much to do as a child. Besides a dirt field for soccer, there aren't any other options for play. Our goal is to build a playground using re-purposed material like recycled tires and plastic bottles and local materials like banana leaves and coconut husks. Through the Peace Corps Partnership Program and World Connect---a nonprofit organization that supports local leaders in under served areas worldwide in solving local challenges by improving the health and well being of women, children and communities---We've applied for funding!
