Go Play! (we are now called www.playgroundideas.org), a non-profit that builds playgrounds throughout the developing world for some of the world’s most disadvantaged children, is seeking to hire enthusiastic, dedicated interns starting in last half of 2010 . Interns will work individually and collectively with each other and with the executive staff of Playgroundideas.org. Candidates may work remotely, using a series of web-based tools or can be located near our our Australia office in Melbourne.

Interns commit to 10-15 hours per week of unpaid work. Interns will be able to work independently on their own time. Must have access to a computer and reliable, high speed internet access (for file transfers and Skype calls). Interns typically work a period of four to six months. There will be a one month trial period, after which the intern will sign a contract.

In addition to general intern responsibilities, each intern track has a particular focus:

Social network Intern: Maintain and improve social networking sites and blog and other online presences including Facebook and website. Tasks include copy writing, researching great stories, editing and proofing. Think: stylish magazine editor with a bucket of sand and a little plastic shovel.

Organisation Development Interns (2): Development Interns work closely with the Managing Director on grant writing, business management and goal setting, event planning, donor relations and other aspects of nonprofit management. They will also support staff with administrative needs, outreach projects, events, tutoring and other programming issues. Think: Admin assistant and social butterfly.

Program Intern: Helping coordinate playground construction projects abroad. Tasks will include researching NGO partners, coordination with project managers on the ground, researching curriculum topics. Think : slick event manager with overalls under your power suit.

To apply, please send an email to Marcus Veerman at [email protected] with the following documents (in Word document or PDF format) attached: resume, cover letter, and list of three references (with phone numbers and email addresses). Please indicate which intern position you are interested in applying for. Interns are accepted on a rolling basis and are required Now.

Get educated about play

child on playground bridge.

Below is a list of the best links we can find about:

-The importance of play

-How to design a play space with the right design and equipment and

-How to make it safe but not too safe (thats right, playgrounds can be too safe).

1) The first 2 links are involved with designing your playground with the right things in mind and making it safe.

Play England have put together this booklet that looks at lots of pertinent issues and things to think about when putting a play space together. If you are thinking about building a playground then this is a good place to start. A great reference on playgrounds safety is found across the seas in the US. America publishes their safety standards for free and they can be downloaded here for free by anyone. What you do on your private property is your business but if you are building a playground anywhere for kids that aren't yours its a good idea to get familiar with the commonly accepted standards even if they don't apply in the country you are planning to build in. We don't want any child to be seriously injured or worse when playing.

2) The links here are also worth reading to get a grip on what play is, and why we have bothered putting so much energy into making places to encourage it. This is a Play statement from the Association of Childrens Education International (ACEI) it is the most concise paper we have found that brings together all the ideas of what play is and why it needs protecting. Also, Here is a Paper from an excellent organisation making some bold statements in the tricky world of litigation we now live in. It is on the fine balance between making a playground safe and going too far so that the playground no longer fulfills its function as a good place for children to play. Thisis really an important document for anyone interested in play to read.

Lastly, this is a manual written by James A Jolley (AKA Jimmy). Sadly, Jimmy has now Passed on but he also had some very similar ideas to GoPlay! about what a playground should be and that it need not be expensive. Before he died, Jimmy wrote a manual that was never published. Some friends of his have now put it online to be shared which is very generous of them. please have a look at Jimmys designs here.

After literally years of searching, we believe these documents will give you a very good grounding in the issues, the joy and the Importance of play in childrens lives worldwide. We look forward to hearing from you about you plans to get involved in the world of Play.

Huge Cardboard playground exhibition that you can PLAY on!

cardboard playground at artplay

The following pictures are the best designs from the ArtPlay exhibition on in May this year. Every year a bunch of Monash University Department of Architecture students get a chance to create a playspace from cardboard to encourage the use of this low cost (often waste material) and give it a bit more life before it is recycled and, of course, to build an amazing space that really takes into account  a childs perspective. As you can see the ideas are really fantastic and encompass so many activities that children love: from the design with so many little draws and shelves to hide and store your crayons, to the fabulous layered and geodesic cubby houses to crawl around in and find a hidden soft place to sit and read, to the Fantasy tree house space with an elevated platform that you can see out from and (just) see into between all the brances. these places offer so many great experiences and memories for children. ArtPlay is a great organisation and Kudos to Monash's Department of Architecture for their great work!
